This Dolomites Cave video has been an absolute best-seller over the years. It shows you how to create a stunning panorama from multiple wide-angle photos and how to also create that stunning visual look with dramatic light effects. Special attention goes to changing the distortion in favor of the subject, adding special light effects such as light bleed in the shadows, light from the side and creating shadows details in the darkness. More techniques, such as Max Rive’s famous color techniques, his semi-black and white conversion and the Unique Contrast Control Technique will also be demonstrated in depth.

About the artwork

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) in the Sexten Dolomites seen from a small cave. Max discovered this small cave while exploring this area in summer. Max took 3 different photos and merged them together as a panorama for this Tre Cime di Lavaredo photo print. He used the Nikon d850 and the Tamron 15-30 mm lens.

When a composition requires a large field of view, the photographer can choose to take multiple different photos and merge them together. In this Dolomites editing tutorial, 3 different images have been merged together in order to show both the cave and the Mountain View. The cave is working as a framing, a natural vignetting and creates incredible depth. Watch and learn how Max is merging the photos together and changing the distortion afterwards to make it look like it's single photo.

When the sun is outside the frame of your landscape photo, on either side of the image, you can choose to make this light visible. This can be done by adding light in a certain color on that part of the image. While your camera is actually able to capture this, it will barely be visible on your raw file while it is a lot more noticeable with the naked eye. Even when there is an obstacle like a small tree in front of it Max is able to add the light on the background. Check out this technique and your images will always benefit from this stunning light effect.

Semi Black and White

Semi Black and White

This unique technique by Max Rive is improving the contrast of the image. This can be achieved by finding a better balance between the brightness of individual colors and the saturation of these colors. Black and white images often allow for a high level of contrast without looking artificial. This is due the balance between contrast and saturation of the colors. At the same time colors give mood and color contrast to the image. Watch and learn how Max applies this technique while maintaining incredible colors.

WHY MAX MADE THIS TUTORIAL

The moment I entered this small cave in the Dolomites, I knew the post-processing was going to be interesting. I entered this small cave in the Dolomites I had to take multiple wide-angle photos in order to include the cave as a framing. I also knew that the processing would include a bit more work, but with the right techniques and work flow wouldn't be all that difficult. That is also the reason I decided to make a from start to finish tutorial of it. What is unique about this tutorial is the distortion techniques and the light effects. With the distortion techniques  you make the surrounding area smaller without making it look distorted. Resulting in a better impact of the mountains. The light effects also add to the impact the mountains have. With this tutorial techniques I want to help others making something special out of an ordinary light condition. Later afternoon light and mood can be as beautiful as a crazy sunset, it just doesn't look that spectacular. With these mood and light effects you can make that visible.

"Brings out the best…"

I've loved Max's images and was delighted that he offered video editing tutorials. I've purchased several of his editing courses, including  Dolomites Cave, and learned something new in every one of them: they are incredibly detailed, easy to follow, and fun! They haven't just allowed me to bring out the best in my photos, but also taught me about composition and location scouting. Knowing that I can make my images shine, and will find great places, makes photography more fun for me.

"Makes learning a pleasure…"

I've been stunned by Max' photos ever since I saw them for the first time when Hasselblad chose his work as Landscape Photographer of the Year. After his editing course,I'm now much more conscious of color palette, and approach grading using curves and color sliders...Max has taught me that sometimes removing a color is just as important as adding or changing a color.  His easy, casual, conversational style in his editing courses makes learning a pleasure instead of a chore.

"My best investment…"

Max’s editing courses helped improve my landscape photography a lot!  What would have taken me potentially years to learn, I was able to grasp and put into my workflow quickly. New ideas, thoughts and editing techniques to help me scout, capture and then post process images have been so incredibly valuable to my progression. These tutorials for me have been my best investment in progressing as a landscape photographer. I look forward to keep learning from you Max!
