Colors are the most important element in today’s post processing. They decide the mood, the contrast, and even the depth in an image. Too many different colors will confuse the viewers’ eye and removing too many color tones will make it more difficult to show a certain mood and create color contrast. In this in-depth processing tutorial, Max Rive will demonstrate how he works with colors and how to come up with the perfect balance. Other techniques will also be demonstrated, such as manual focus stacking, shadow painting, the unique contrast control technique and more.

About the artwork

SOME TECHNIQUES EXPLAINED

Color Balance.

Color Balance.

The color balance technique is one of Max Rive's secrets to create incredible colors in his landscape photos. In camera Raw he is using the split toning options, to give a certain color tone and saturation to the shadows, midtones (with the new camera raw) and highlights. You will be surprised what Max's favorite combinations of colors is. In Adobe Photoshop Max is again using the color balance option. This allows him to greatly fine-tune the colors of his landscape image.

When in the field you can choose to do an exposure blending, which means taking multiple photos with different exposure settings, to combine them in Photoshop for a higher dynamic range. It can always happen you didn't do this technique because you either didn't expect it to be necessary, or you just forgot about it. Max is demonstrating an editing technique in which he is removing underexposed parts of the image. Yes, we are talking about totally underexposed parts in the raw-file, totally black.

Vignetting.

Vignetting.

With adding vignetting to a landscape image, you add darkness to the corners. This allows the eye to give more focus to the center of the image, which is expected to be the area with the most interesting parts. Watch and learn in this editing class, how to add the best vignetting during all stages of the editing process.

WHY MAX MADE THIS TUTORIAL

Even though I already had 2 other tutorials with a similar view on Cerro Torre in Patagonia, I still decided to make a tutorial on this one as well. So while the photo is not unique in terms of composition, it is in terms of color tones and light. The green color tones of summer requires a different kind of processing. The other reason is the technique I used to fix the dark, almost underexposed parts, which is a totally unique one, which I believe haven't been used by anyone else. The light in this image comes from behind, while the sun is already well above the horizon. The colors are nothing special, yet want to show that the colors are not the deciding factor with light. This processing tutorial also includes manual focus stacking, adding light from the side with selective colors, and it demonstrates different sharpening techniques for Instagram. It has a long duration, but I only add tutorials in which I can demonstrate many different editing techniques, and for that Green Paradise is on top of the list!

''I highly recommend!''

I have purchased several of Max Rive's editing courses over the years, including the Green Paradise tutorial, and have learned something new from each one. Max has a unique processing style and he offers lots of insight into how he processes each image. While the technical processing sections of the videos are excellent, what I find most useful is hearing him explain why he makes each artistic and creative decision. These artistic principles can be applied to your own images to help you improve your photography. I highly recommend Max's processing videos!
