With Max Rive's Photoshop Side Light Editing Tutorial, you can create an incredible light effect called side light into your landscapes. This side light is visible when the sun is outside the frame, but still hits the lens, creating a faded haze. The intensity of this faded haze is often pretty low on your camera lens, and it can also create unwanted sun flares. As a result, we use Lens hoods or block the sun with our hands, to have the cleanest and sharpest photo without this side light. When this light is added in post, with Max's editing technique, it looks both clean and it adds the mood and drama of the side light. This side light makes the image also more dynamic, and it connects with the main subject in the photo - in this case, the tree.

Unique Contrast Control.

Unique Contrast Control.

When you add contrast to your landscape image, the depth and the light will improve. At the same time, it will also add darkness and contrast to parts of the image which are not desirable. This can be the case with already dark parts, and areas which should not get more contrast, such as less interesting areas. With the Unique Contrast Control Technique, all the contrast will be added manually, which enables the artist to create an incredible new light and contrast settings.

Unless the sun has been captured inside the frame or just outside the frame, the light itself is not visible in a photo. A visible light is welcome though, because it adds mood to the image, can give balance to the composition and can create a nice contrast between warm and cooler colors. In this photoshop editing tutorial, Max will demonstrate how to add light from the side in Camera Raw and will also create a nice color contrast with the opposite side. In Photoshop the Light from the Side will be enhanced with a very simple editing technique.

Selective Colors.

Selective Colors.

While colors add mood and contrast to an image they can also work as a distraction. This can be the case when too many colors are present. The key to mood is concentrating on only 3 to 4 different colors. When controlling the brightness, saturation and hues of each color individually, an incredible accurate and well-balanced color balance can be created. While the instruments are there for everyone, knowing in which direction to put all the sliders is a different story. Max Rive has created an incredible workflow to deliver the perfect color balance with the Selective Colors in both Camera Raw and Photoshop.

WHY MAX MADE THIS TUTORIAL

...I have used the side light effect in many of my images now, and it just greatly improves the mood and feel of the image.

I took this shot on the Alpe di Siusi/ Seiser Alm in the Dolomites during a sunset. The sun was outside the frame, and to be honest, it was very far away from the frame. Still, I liked to add some light because I felt the composition could use some more dynamic and mood. It was the first time I applied this light effect into any image, and I totally loved the results. I have used the side light effect in many of my images now, from low to high opacity, and it just greatly improves the mood and feel of the image.

''best in the business''

The Max Rive Photoshop side light editing tutorial is the best in the business. What I loved most about this Photoshop editing tutorial is that it isn’t about copy-cat his style, instead they are about smart step by step workflow processes on how to get the best out of a photo so that these same skills can then be applied to your photos to bring out their best in your own style. If you are contemplating purchasing a Photoshop tutorial series, this is the one I would recommend, and they are worth it!
