PATAGONIA ITINERARY

Day 1

Once we have collected everyone from the airport or their accommodation, we will begin the amazing drive to El Chalten. Along the way you may catch your first glimpse of the incredible Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. If the light allows we can stop for photographs right away! Upon arrival in El Chalten we will leave our non-essential gear (laptops, extra clothing, etc) in a secure apartment and meet with our local guide and porters. From here we begin our hike into Patagonia! We’ll set up camp near the base of Fitz Roy and begin our exploration and photography from there.

Images Day 1

Day 2

Sunrise at Fitzroy - for many a dream for long, will come a reality on the morning of our Patagonia Autumn Tour! We will focus on a nearby lake and waterfall with the dominating mountains as an epic backdrop. After we’ve captured the best of the light, we’ll return to camp and enjoy all you can drink coffee/tea and a hearty breakfast to fuel us for further adventures. After breakfast we will move to our next campsite. From here we will continue to photograph the majestic Fitz Roy peaks, exploring the endless foregrounds and compositional options. Our guides know the area better than anyone and will have multiple suggestions as well including nearby lakes, trees, forests and reflective ponds.

Images Day 2

Day3

For this sunrise, we will get even further into the mountains and hike up to an alpine lake with Fitz Roy towering above it. One of the most impressive mountain lakes in the world! After this shoot, we return to camp for food and a quick break. Then it’s time to move to the next basecamp - which will be Lago Torre. This will be our longest hike, but it’s an easy trail with exhilarating views almost the entire time.

Images Day3

Day 4 and 5

Exploring the Lago Torre area. Here we will explore endless compositions of Cerro Torre, an incredible fang shaped mountain overlooking the nearby glacier lake. This location is conveniently close to several interesting features including the icy lake, a raging river, and vibrant trees. Lago Torre is great for scouting, whether with your guides or on your own, the choice is yours. We are always nearby to help you in conveying the beauty of this place. On day 5 we will hike back to El Chalten where we will stay and a hotel and freshen up. Here we will demonstrate some post processing skills with the option to photograph the peaks right from town.

Images Day 4 and 5

Day 6

It’s time to leave El Chalten and transition from Argentina to Torres del Paine, Chile. This is a full day of travel which includes breaks and a border crossing. With the vast landscapes and empty roads before us, we will cover a lot of ground today. In the evening we will reach our luxury accommodations right in the heart of Torres Del Paine. The unique mountain peaks are towering above and can be viewed/photographed immediately.

Images Day 6

Day 7 and 8

Here in Torres del Paine, we are based in one of the best hotels the entire park has to offer. More importantly, we are in one of the best locations for landscape photography on the planet! Not only for the wonderful mountainscape, but also for the potential the weather brings here. The textures of the clouds, the directions of light and the powerful reds of sunrise make this a very distinguished destination. Here we access our shooting locations by short drives and small hikes. During the day, more processing instructions are available.

Images Day 7 and 8

Day 9 and 10

After our sunrise shoot in TDP, we will make the journey back to El Calafate and visit yet another amazing location. We are going to shoot the incredible Perito Moreno glacier! The afternoon side light makes for great ambience here and the blue of this massive glacier is beyond imaginable. This evening we will stay in a nearby hotel and celebrate our final dinner together. On the morning of day 10, if weather permits, we may return to the glacier. Otherwise, we’ll finish up with some final photo editing strategies. As this is the last day of the tour, we will arrange transport from the town to the airport.

The best I’ve attended

Having visited the Dolomites in Italy with Max as well as visiting Patagonia through him, I can hand on heart thoroughly recommend Max Patagonia tour. I’m pleased to say that these tours are easily some of the best I’ve ever had the good fortune of attending. This was in large part down to how down-to-Earth and approachable Max and his crew are. We went above and beyond in trying to capture something truly unique during the Patagonia Photo Tour and I picked up a wealth of information from both trips, all whilst making some real friends for life.

Lived up to high expectations

Patagonia is somewhere I have wanted to visit for a long time with my camera and Max's tour certainly lived up to expectations. The first part of the tour was camping, this is the best way to maximize your time in Parque National Los Glaciares so this was a big plus it felt like luxury when we had a lodge in Chile.

Andrew Robertson

Beyond our expectations

We were absolutely blown away by how beautiful Patagonia was, and we got photos that were beyond anything any of us expected.  The Porter service carrying our stuff during the hike was a great idea - it helped us to make the hiking much easier and comfortable. The light, the colors, the mountains, the rivers, the interesting trees, shapes, all were like you had walked into a perfect scene that had been crafted for photography. We learned a ton on this Patagonia Photo Tour which far exceeded my expectations!

FAQ

What Physical Fitness level is required?

A moderate level of fitness is required for this tour. There is a fair amount of hiking with elevation involved. While the itinerary is action packed, you may opt out of some of the shoots to rest instead. If you consider your level of physical fitness inadequate for this tour please contact us to discuss possible options.

What lenses shall I bring to Patagonia?

We recommend to bring a wide angle (zoom) and a tele-zoom. During the hiking part we recommend to bing only 2 lenses in order to keep the weight down to a minimum.

Where do we leave our luggage when we are out camping?

We have a secured room in which we can leave luggage we don't need during the hike. Such as laptops, extra clothes, lenses, food etc.

What will the weather be like?

The climate in Patagonia can vary greatly from day to day. From wind and rain to incredible calms, the weather is the wild card here. These dramatic shifts provide the greatest opportunities for epic displays of light. We need to be properly prepared to be comfortable in any conditions so we can take advantage of these opportunities. We will pursue reflective lakes on some days, and stormy skies on others.

Which tour has the best Autumn colors?

The autumn colors are at its peak between April 2nd and April 25th. This is an average because each year the Autumn starts and finishes at a different time.

Will we shoot any wildlife?

Yes, we will certainly see many Guanacos. We have a good chance to see Condors and a small change to see Pumas (very scared for humans and in South America not dangerous). If we are very lucky we will also see huemul deer.

Do I need specific hiking gear?

We provide single person tents. Sleeping bags and mats can be rented at the start with the porter services. You need to bring your own backpack, shoes and other clothes and smaller items. A detailed pack list will be provided upon registration.

I have a question which is not covered in ths FAQ.

We recommend reading the information brochure PDF. You will get all tour PDF’s by email when joining our exclusive tour list (CLICK HERE)
