Arrival & autumn in Val di Funes

The tour starts at Venice Marco Polo Airport by 10 AM, where we’ll pick you up before driving 2.5 hours into the Dolomites. After lunch, we begin with St. Johann Church, surrounded by a beautiful mix of autumn greens, yellows, oranges and reds. We’ll photograph it from two viewpoints before visiting another nearby church. For sunset, we continue to Alpe di Siusi, the largest high-altitude alpine meadow in Europe.

What sets our tours apart

It’s not only where we take you.
It’s how we spend our time there.

Otherworldly Landscapes

Find your own perspective on the Dolomites, from golden larches to quiet mountain lakes. Max’s years of exploring the area take us beyond the familiar viewpoints, combining Tre Cime and Alpe di Siusi with hidden valleys and carefully chosen foregrounds.

Max Rive & Madison McCardle

Max has personally scouted the Dolomites’ photography locations, finding original compositions and learning how each scene responds to changing light and weather.

He’ll help you refine your technique and make the most of the autumn conditions, returning with outstanding images and greater confidence.

Madison is a landscape photographer and writer with an eye for original compositions. She helps scout our locations and offers practical guidance, making sure you get the most from each shoot.

Ask questions, try an idea, or spend a little time finding your own angle. The guidance is there when you need it.

Included in your adventure

Professional GuidesExpert photography guidance from Max Rive and Madison McCardle.

Max is one of the most experienced guides you could have in the Dolomites, with an intimate knowledge of the best locations, compositions and changing conditions. Alongside him is Madison McCardle, an incredibly talented landscape photographer and assistant, always ready to help, guide and make sure every participant gets the most from each location.

All LodgingAll hotel and accommodation costs during the tour.

We stay in high-quality hotels and apartments, carefully chosen for comfort and location. Max knows exactly where to base the group—away from the crowds of Cortina, while actually staying closer to many of the Dolomites’ best photography locations, meaning less driving and more time in the field.

BreakfastDaily breakfast is included at all accommodations.

After an incredible morning shoot, enjoy some of the best breakfasts the Italian Dolomites have to offer—the perfect way to relax, recharge and start the rest of the day.

TransportationAll ground transportation during the entire tour.

We travel in spacious 9-seater vans, giving everyone plenty of room for themselves and their camera gear. We’ll pick you up and drop you off directly at your accommodation, while Max and Mady’s experience behind the wheel means you can sit back, travel comfortably and enjoy the incredible Dolomites scenery along the way.

Max Rive's Processing Instructional VideosExclusive editing videos to elevate your photography.

After signing up, you’ll receive a massive bonus package: all 18 of Max’s editing tutorials, 9 Lightroom preset packs, and 3 exclusive In-the-Field tutorials. Everything is downloadable and comes with lifetime streaming access, so you can keep learning long after the tour is over.

Personal EditingPersonal editing of one of your images during the tour.

One photograph of your choice can be edited by Max from start to finish, with the entire process screen-recorded and shared with the group. While completely optional, these edits can provide valuable ideas for processing images from each location—and give you access to additional editing videos featuring photographs and techniques from across the tour.

To arrange separately

Travel Insurance and FlightsTravel insurance and flights are not included.

Travel insurance is required and must be arranged before the tour begins. We’re happy to provide advice and recommend suitable options if needed. It usually costs only a small amount compared with the overall trip, but can provide valuable protection and assistance should anything unexpected happen.

Lunch, Dinner and DrinksLunch, dinner, snacks and drinks are not included.

We’ll visit some of the best local restaurants for lunch and dinner whenever the schedule allows. Since we often spend long hours in the field chasing the best light, it won’t always be practical to have both meals at a restaurant. On those days, we’ll stop at supermarkets or local places for convenient takeaway options. For example, after shooting sunset at Tre Cime, we’ll return late in the evening, making a restaurant dinner impractical.

Questions and Answers

Not sure whether the tour is right for you? Ask Max about the walking, equipment or anything else on your mind.

Ask Max a question ↗
Will the tour still go ahead if there are not enough participants?

Yes. We do not require a minimum number of participants, so the tour will go ahead even if the group is smaller than expected. For small hiking tours such as Patagonia, which are limited to six participants, last-minute cancellations may simply result in an even smaller and more personal group.

A tour would only be cancelled in exceptional circumstances, such as a serious geopolitical situation that makes it impossible to operate safely. Otherwise, you can book with confidence, knowing the tour will take place on the scheduled dates.

Will we visit Seceda?

Yes, Seceda is part of the tour. We’ll take the cable car all the way to the top, giving us easy access to its spectacular viewpoints. Because conditions can make a huge difference here, we’ll choose the best weather window during the tour to give you the strongest possible chance of coming home with great images.

Why do you call it Secret Spots?

Some locations are intentionally not revealed publicly, as sharing them could quickly lead to overcrowding. Several of these spots were discovered by Max himself, and he prefers to keep them exclusive to tour participants, preserving both the experience and the photographic potential of each location.

Can I bring my drone?

Yes, you are welcome to bring a drone. Flying is not permitted at Seceda and Tre Cime, but there are other locations where you can use it. Max will be happy to advise you on the best places to fly and the strongest aerial compositions to look for.

What can I expect during a photography shoot?

Before every shoot, Max will brief the group on where we’re going, the compositions we can expect, and which gear and clothing to bring. Once on location, you are free to explore and photograph independently or follow Max’s guidance.

Max will share different composition ideas and help with camera settings, focus stacking techniques, and refining your compositions. Every shoot is focused on maximizing your photographic results—finding strong and unique images while using the weather and light conditions to our advantage.

Is the Dolomites itinerary flexible?

Yes, while we plan to visit all the locations listed in the itinerary—and several additional spots—Max will adjust the exact schedule based on the weather conditions to maximize our photographic opportunities.

Different locations work best under very different conditions. Some are spectacular with low or dramatic cloud cover, while Alpe di Siusi can be incredible with morning fog. Through years of experience in the Dolomites, Max knows how to read the forecasts, cloud heights and local weather patterns to determine which location gives us the best chance of exceptional conditions each day.

Been to the Dolomites before?

Even if you have already visited the Dolomites, joining the tour can give you a completely different photographic experience:

  1. Discover Unique Compositions.
Max will take you beyond the obvious viewpoints and help you find strong, original compositions you may never have discovered on your own.
  2. Learn Directly From Max.
Throughout every shoot, Max explains his approach to composition, light, camera technique and location planning, giving you insights you can apply far beyond the Dolomites.
  3. Master Changing Weather Conditions.
Knowing a location is one thing; knowing when to photograph it is another. Max will show you how to read forecasts, cloud height, fog and changing light to choose the right location at the right moment.
  4. Become Part of the Community.
The tour is also about sharing the experience with Max and a small group of passionate photographers. It’s a great opportunity to make new connections, exchange ideas and become part of a photography community that often continues long after the tour.
See you out there
