HIGHLIGHTS
Itinerary
Image
Day 1

You will be picked up from either Calafate Airport or from your accommodation in case you have arrived prior. After saying hi to the group, it is time to drive in around 3 hours to the small town of El Chalten. We will meet up with the porters and guide - who will assist us during the first 5 days of the tour. All non-essential gear can be left in our apartment. We will have an apartment available at all times - in case of terrible weather. But, we just prepare for the worst and aim for the best, so time to get moving into the mountains! The first part of the hike is going uphill. We will arrive after1 hour of hiking at our base-camp. Our basemen is situated with a view over a lake, and Monte Fitz Roy in the distance. We will shoot sunset from the lake and from a waterfall nearby. During the night we will shoot the milky way with Monte Fitz Roy in the background. Of course, this is optional.

Image
Day 2

The morning of day 2 is a special one - because we will witness the first sunrise on Monte Fitz Roy from a very special location. It is near our base-camp and offers a stunning view with a river leading to the mountain. After this incredible sunrise shoot, a breakfast, and a one hour but flat hike, we will arrive on our second base-camp. We are now not far from Monte Fitz Roy, and will visit many different spots around base-camp which all have a unique character.

Image
Day 3 + 4

On day 3 and 4 we will also shoot around basecamp. There are multiple great locations to choose from. We will also go to Laguna de los Tres - the highest lake in the area directly on the foot of Monte Fitz Roy. We will also visit a grave-yard of dead trees, Laguna Sucia, a secret viewpoint and many more great spots. There will also be great night photography options for the real die-hards!

Image
Day 4 + 5

Exploring the Lago Torre area. Here we will explore endless compositions of Cerro Torre, an incredible fang shaped mountain overlooking the nearby After our morning shoot on day 4 (Monte Fitz Roy) it is time to visit it's neighbor: Cerro Torre. To reach our base-camp, we hike along a mostly flat hiking trail over the course of 2 hours+. The hike offers some incredible views on the mountains and the beautiful fall colored forests. From Cerro Torre base-camp, we will shoot the mountain from the lake and the river from both sides. To get the best photos we have to cross the river by rope harness. Don't worry, you will be 100% secured. Our guide will take care of the required gear (and permits). All locations are near our base-camp. At night, if the weather allows it, we will shoot Cerro Torre with the night sky! glacier lake. This location is conveniently close to several interesting features including the icy lake, a raging river, and vibrant trees. Lago Torre is great for scouting, whether with your guides or on your own, the choice is yours. We are always nearby to help you in conveying the beauty of this place.

On day 5 we will hike back to El Chalten where we will stay and a hotel and freshen up. Here we have the option to photograph the peaks right from town.

Day 5 + 6

On day 5 after another great morning shoot around Cerro Torre, it is time to hike back to El Chalten. We will check-in our 4 star accommodation (different from our apartment). For sunset we will drive to our sunset spot. We will shoot Monte Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre in one shot with a river lining up underneath. It is also possible to get some great comps with your drone.

On day 6 we will head out for a sunrise shoot. There are different options depending on the weather and how the shoot on day 5 went. We will also start driving towards Chile/Torres del Paine. Along the way we will look out for Guanacos - they can often been seen in the fields in front of Monte Fitz Roy. If we do - we will shoot them with our tele lenses.

Image
Day 7 + 8 + 9

From day 7 to 9 we will stay in Torres del Paine, Chile. We will only do small hikes, with great views. The landscape is more flat, but with mountains just as steep and spectacular as in Argentina. The forests are smaller and more bold - due to the hard winds and a wildfire that happened many years ago. The sunrises are some of the best in the world due to the location of the mountains and the lack of mountains in the east. We will shoot many different comps - most you won't find on other tours! During the day it is time to relax in our luxurious hotel. Max is always ready for editing tips and critique sessions.

Day 9 + 10

After our incredible sunrise shoot on day 9 in Torres del Paine, it is time to cross the border into Argentina again. We will check into our hotel in El Calafate in the evening. It is time to pack for your next day flight. But, don't pack your camera gear just yet, because in the morning on day 10, we will first visit the Perito Moreno glacier. This glacier is 30 km / 19 mile long and has to be visited and shot. We will aim for some dramatic clouds in the morning and frame the glacier with one of the trees. After checkout and breakfast it is time to drop off everyone at the airport at no later than 1pm.

FAQ

What physical fitness is required?

A moderate level of fitness is required for this tour. There is a fair amount of hiking with elevation involved. While the itinerary is action packed, you may opt out of some of the shoots to rest instead. If you consider your level of physical fitness inadequate for this tour please contact us to discuss possible options.

Where do we leave our luggage when we are out camping?

We have a secured room in which we can leave luggage we don't need during the hike. Such as laptops, extra clothes, lenses, food etc.

What lenses should I bring to Patagonia?

We recommend to bring a wide angle (zoom) and a tele-zoom. During the hiking part we recommend to bring only 2 lenses in order to keep the weight down to a minimum.

What will the weather be like?

The climate in Patagonia can vary greatly from day to day. From wind and rain to incredible calms, the weather is the wild card here. These dramatic shifts provide the greatest opportunities for epic displays of light. We need to be properly prepared to be comfortable in any conditions so we can take advantage of these opportunities. We will pursue reflective lakes on some days, and stormy skies on others.

Which tour has the best Autumn colors?

The autumn colors are at its peak between April 2nd and April 25th. This is an average because each year the Autumn starts and finishes at a different time.

Will we photograph any wildlife?

Yes, we will certainly see many Guanacos. We have a good chance to see Condors and a small chance to see Pumas (very scared for humans and in South America not dangerous). If we are very lucky we will also see huemul deer.

Do I need specific hiking gear?

We provide tents. Sleeping bags and mats can be rented at the start with the porter services. You need to bring your own backpack, shoes and other clothes and smaller items. A detailed pack list will be provided upon registration.

Can I bring my drone?

Yes! There is one location which we go to just outside the National Park and you can get a really good photo here with drone. All other times we are inside National Parks so cannot fly.

Is there a required experience level?

No, we have photographers from all experience levels participating. Whether you ask how to shoot in manual mode, how to take a panorama or how to master the handheld focus stack technique – the guide will always be happy to help and adopt his teaching to each skill level.
